{"id":1559,"date":"2014-01-01T01:55:55","date_gmt":"2014-01-01T01:55:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ralphstraumann.ch\/blog\/?p=1559"},"modified":"2014-01-01T02:04:27","modified_gmt":"2014-01-01T02:04:27","slug":"happy-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ralphstraumann.ch\/blog\/2014\/01\/happy-2014\/","title":{"rendered":"Happy 2014!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>2013 has been a very interesting year for me:<\/p>\n<p>I rebuilt\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ralphstraumann.ch\">my website<\/a>, started to self-host this blog and successfully applied for it to be included in the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.planetgs.com\/\">Planet Geospatial<\/a>\u00a0aggregator. I also revamped the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/geo.ebp.ch\">Ernst Basler + Partner GIS blog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>From March to May I had an unpaid leave from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebp.ch\/en\">Ernst Basler + Partner<\/a>\u00a0(EBP) and worked in the UK for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oii.ox.ac.uk\">Oxford Internet Institute<\/a>\u00a0(OII) on a research project around user-generated content or VGI. Also, after that period I continued working part-time for the OII and even had the opportunity to physically return to Oxford and visit my colleagues there.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ralphstraumann.ch\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/OII.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-1562\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ralphstraumann.ch\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/OII.jpg\" width=\"717\" height=\"538\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ralphstraumann.ch\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/OII.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.ralphstraumann.ch\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/OII-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 717px) 100vw, 717px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Also in 2013, my interest in data-driven journalism grew and I deepened my connections with the Open (Government) Data movement here in Switzerland and globally.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ralphstraumann.ch\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/wikipedia_africa.png\" width=\"413\" height=\"272\" \/>Three visualizations of mine (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ralphstraumann.ch\/projects\/swiss-population-cartogram\/\">a Switzerland population cartogram<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ralphstraumann.ch\/projects\/zurich-sky\/\">a temporal aggregation of webcam pictures<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/geography.oii.ox.ac.uk\/2013\/10\/information-imbalance-africa-on-wikipedia\/\">a visualization of OII data on Wikipedia in Africa<\/a>) have made several appearances in the media and found some audience (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ralphstraumann.ch\/blog\/2013\/08\/reworked-versions-of-my-hexagonal-population-cartogram\/\">e.g.<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Work at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebp.ch\/en\">EBP<\/a> has yielded various interesting projects, the most recent one being a strongly research-focused project regarding road traffic accidents and the relationships with infrastructure and weather conditions.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1395 alignleft\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ralphstraumann.ch\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/geobeer_logo.png\" width=\"256\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ralphstraumann.ch\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/geobeer_logo.png 256w, https:\/\/www.ralphstraumann.ch\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/geobeer_logo-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 256px) 100vw, 256px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ping13.net\">Stephan Heuel<\/a>\u00a0and I organised various instalments of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.geobeer.ch\">GeoBeer series<\/a>\u00a0throughout different regions of Switzerland. The event proved to be a large (and very rewarding) success: it attracted (in total) several hundred people from very different GIS\/cartography backgrounds and trajectories.
