As a geographer and data\u00a0consultant\u00a0I&#8217;m convinced, an important part of my work lies in the question what tools best fit a purpose or a goal I want to achieve.<\/p>\n<p>But this is only one side of the coin: I think it&#8217;s equally about knowing when not to use\u00a0the tools that one is\u00a0most\u00a0familiar with. And when to educate oneself\u00a0on other tools or collaborate with experts from other subject areas. You know, <em>when\u00a0you carry a hammer<\/em> <em>etc.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In his talk, Noah Iliinsky lists the following questions as helpful heuristics for when to (not) use maps:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is location information meaningful?<\/li>\n<li>Is location the <em>most important<\/em> relationship?<\/li>\n<li>How relevant is geographic detail?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I agree.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=c6eUyxHGmJ4\">Go watch the rest of the talk<\/a>: it&#8217;s entertaining <em>and<\/em> educative.<\/p>\n<p>Addendum: <em>Junk Charts<\/em>&#8216; <a href=\"http:\/\/junkcharts.typepad.com\/junk_charts\/map\">map tag<\/a> is a good place to look for other examples of <a href=\"http:\/\/junkcharts.typepad.com\/junk_charts\/2013\/12\/the-need-to-think-about-what-youre-seeing.html\">unsuccessful map use<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/junkcharts.typepad.com\/junk_charts\/2012\/06\/geographical-data-charted-right.html\">successfully avoided<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/junkcharts.typepad.com\/junk_charts\/2012\/11\/the-electoral-map-sans-the-map.html\">map use<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recently, I&#8217;ve stumbled across Noah Iliinsky&#8217;s Where 2012 talk When To *Not* Use Maps.
