Have you heard of the Geohipster blog<\/a>? It’s the self-described place for people who ‘grow\u00a0their\u00a0own organic vertices,\u00a0use gluten-free topology\u00a0or\u00a0only geocode by hand, in small batches’. And I give at a big recommendation, put it into your feed reader. And\u00a0relax, you don’t need to be a fixie aficionado\/-a in order to appreciate the Geohipster movement.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Atanas Entchev\u00a0(of ENTCHEV GIS<\/a>)\u00a0and Glenn Letham (of\u00a0GIS User<\/a>)\u00a0keep Geohipster interesting by interviewing industry exponents<\/a>. So far, I’ve particularly\u00a0enjoyed the\u00a0interviews with Andrew Turner<\/a> (of Esri), Bill Dollins<\/a> (of Zekiah), Jonah Adkins<\/a> (of GISi) and Brian Timoney.<\/a><\/p>\n

Atanas and Glenn collect Geohipster wearing their Geohipster shirts on a map<\/a>. Obviously, no matter how hip your shirt is, this sampling methodology will only ever give you a very incomplete picture of your fans. Hence\u00a0I got\u00a0the idea to geocode and visualise devoted fans<\/del>\u00a0followers of Geohipster. I adjusted my SwissGIS map<\/a> code<\/a> and produced The Geohipster Map<\/a>:<\/p>\n

All\u00a0followers of the @GeoHipster account<\/a> (representing GeoHipster<\/a> on Twitter) who have a public account and feature geocode-able information in their\u00a0Twitter profile\u00a0(in the\u00a0\u201clocation\u201d attribute) are visualised on the Geohipster Map. A geocode-able location attribute either contains\u00a0a recognisable\u00a0place name or lat-lon coordinates in WGS1984, separated by either a comma, a semi-colon, a slash or a vertical bar (this one: |) (e.g: \u201c47.51 \/ 8.54\u201d). If a place name is given, it’s\u00a0geocoded using the Geonames API\u00a0and\u00a0a minor random component of usually a few hundred meters\u00a0is added to reduce clustering of map markers.<\/p>\n

A special case are followers who indicate their location as, for example \u201ceverywhere\u201d, \u201cglobal\u201d, \u201cearth\u201d, \u201csomewhere\u201d, \u201cworldwide\u201d, \u201cunclear\u201d or \u201cNull Island\u201d: I took the freedom to assign their location to the<\/a> latter<\/a>. It just seemed fitting for Geohipsters.<\/p>\n

If you are a follower of @GeoHipster<\/a>\u00a0and have filled in your location field but are not displayed on the map or in an unexpected place, the location is not properly geocodeable by GeoNames. You can test the suitability of your location field’s contents here using the search function<\/a> (although there is some evidence that there can be differences between the search function and the API).<\/p>\n
