It&#8217;s the self-described place for people who &#8216;grow\u00a0their\u00a0own organic vertices,\u00a0use gluten-free topology\u00a0or\u00a0only geocode by hand, in small batches&#8217;. And I give at a big recommendation, put it into your feed reader. And\u00a0relax, you don&#8217;t need to be a fixie aficionado\/-a in order to appreciate the Geohipster movement.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Atanas Entchev\u00a0(of <a href=\"http:\/\/entchev.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">ENTCHEV GIS<\/a>)\u00a0and Glenn Letham (of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gisuser.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">GIS User<\/a>)\u00a0keep Geohipster interesting by interviewing <a href=\"http:\/\/geohipster.com\/interviewees\/\">industry exponents<\/a>. So far, I&#8217;ve particularly\u00a0enjoyed the\u00a0interviews with <a href=\"http:\/\/geohipster.com\/2014\/03\/07\/andrew-turner-share-experiment-fail-try-share-ride-geofixie-like-boss\/\">Andrew Turner<\/a> (of Esri), <a href=\"http:\/\/geohipster.com\/2014\/04\/15\/bill-dollins-to-geohipster-programming-feels-very-similar-to-writing-a-poem\/\">Bill Dollins<\/a> (of Zekiah), <a href=\"http:\/\/geohipster.com\/2014\/09\/02\/jonah-adkins-engaging-like-minded-geo-people-via-twitter-provides-great-unfiltered-look-whats-working-whats\/\">Jonah Adkins<\/a> (of GISi) and <a href=\"http:\/\/geohipster.com\/2014\/10\/06\/brian-timoney-g-stands-much-geospatial-gis\/\">Brian Timoney.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Atanas and Glenn collect Geohipster wearing their Geohipster shirts on a <a href=\"http:\/\/geohipster.com\/map-geohipster-sightings\/\">map<\/a>. Obviously, no matter how hip your shirt is, this sampling methodology will only ever give you a very incomplete picture of your fans. Hence\u00a0I got\u00a0the idea to geocode and visualise devoted <del>fans<\/del>\u00a0followers of Geohipster. I adjusted my <a href=\"http:\/\/ralphstraumann.ch\/projects\/swissgis-map\/\">SwissGIS map<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ralphstraumann.ch\/blog\/2014\/11\/geocoding-twitter-users-the-swissgis-map\/\">code<\/a> and produced <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ralphstraumann.ch\/projects\/geohipster-map\/\">The Geohipster Map<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ralphstraumann.ch\/projects\/geohipster-map\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1835\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ralphstraumann.ch\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Geohipster_Map-1024x728.png\" alt=\"Geohipster Map\" width=\"720\" height=\"511\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ralphstraumann.ch\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Geohipster_Map-1024x728.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.ralphstraumann.ch\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/Geohipster_Map-300x213.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>All\u00a0followers of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/geohipster\">@GeoHipster account<\/a> (representing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geohipster.com\/\">GeoHipster<\/a> on Twitter) who have a public account and feature geocode-able information in their\u00a0Twitter profile\u00a0(in the\u00a0\u201clocation\u201d attribute) are visualised on the Geohipster Map. A geocode-able location attribute either contains\u00a0a recognisable\u00a0place name or lat-lon coordinates in WGS1984, separated by either a comma, a semi-colon, a slash or a vertical bar (this one: |) (e.g: \u201c47.51 \/ 8.54\u201d). If a place name is given, it&#8217;s\u00a0geocoded using the Geonames API\u00a0and\u00a0a minor random component of usually a few hundred meters\u00a0is added to reduce clustering of map markers.<\/p>\n<p>A special case are followers who indicate their location as, for example \u201ceverywhere\u201d, \u201cglobal\u201d, \u201cearth\u201d, \u201csomewhere\u201d, \u201cworldwide\u201d, \u201cunclear\u201d or \u201cNull Island\u201d: I took the freedom to assign their location to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nullisland.com\/\">the<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Null_Island\">latter<\/a>. You can test the suitability of your location field&#8217;s contents <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geonames.org\/\">here using the search function<\/a> (although there is some evidence that there can be differences between the search function and the API).<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you want to be on the map: Simply follow\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/geohipster\">@GeoHipster<\/a>\u00a0and let your hipster flag fly.
