{"id":705,"date":"2011-11-19T13:52:01","date_gmt":"2011-11-19T12:52:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/visurus.wordpress.com\/?p=705"},"modified":"2013-12-10T11:27:01","modified_gmt":"2013-12-10T11:27:01","slug":"zipscribble-map-italy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ralphstraumann.ch\/blog\/2011\/11\/zipscribble-map-italy\/","title":{"rendered":"ZIPScribble Map Italy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier I&#8217;ve blogged a <a href=\"http:\/\/visurus.wordpress.com\/2011\/10\/16\/zipscribble-map-switzerland-%E2%80%93-part-i\/\">two-parts<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/visurus.wordpress.com\/2011\/10\/27\/zipscribble-map-switzerland-%E2%80%93-part-ii\/\">tutorial<\/a> on how to create <a href=\"http:\/\/eagereyes.org\/Applications\/ZIPScribbleMap.html\">ZIPScribble Maps<\/a> using the <a href=\"http:\/\/processing.org\/\">Processing<\/a> visualization framework.<\/p>\n<p>The map uses a background I made with <a href=\"http:\/\/mapbox.com\/tilemill\/\">TileMill<\/a> and CC-BY-licensed postcode data from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geonames.org\/\">Geonames<\/a> gazetteer portal. (By the way, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.labaume.de\/blog\/?p=279\">here&#8217;s an informative short TileMill<\/a> tutorial by Pierre La Baume)<\/p>\n<p>As explained <a href=\"https:\/\/visurus.wordpress.com\/2011\/10\/27\/zipscribble-map-switzerland-%E2%80%93-part-ii\/\">earlier<\/a>, there are different levels in my ZIPScribble Maps:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Level 1 ZIPScribble Map: Only the first digit of the postcode is compared. Thus, a discontinuity is detected, for example, between postal codes 8679 and 9000, but no discontinuity is detected between 8399 and 8400.<\/li>\n<li>Level 2 ZIPScribble Map: The first two digits are compared. In Switzerland level 3 is much more fragmented than level 2. In Italy, level 3 seems to distinguish big cities from their surroundings.<\/p>\n<p>Consider, for example, Genova on the coast of the Mediterranean sea in the top-left\/north-west corner of the ZIPScribble Map. At level 3, Genova (coloured bright green) stands separate from the surrounding towns (purple\/fuchsia).
