{"id":794,"date":"2012-01-18T20:47:56","date_gmt":"2012-01-18T19:47:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/visurus.wordpress.com\/?p=794"},"modified":"2012-01-18T20:47:56","modified_gmt":"2012-01-18T19:47:56","slug":"openstreetmap-a-valid-competitor-to-official-base-maps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ralphstraumann.ch\/blog\/2012\/01\/openstreetmap-a-valid-competitor-to-official-base-maps\/","title":{"rendered":"OpenStreetMap: A valid competitor to official base maps?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Still in last year, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cedricmoullet.com\/\">C\u00e9dric Moullet<\/a>, amongst others <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mapfish.org\/\">MapFish<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/geoext.org\/\">GeoExt<\/a> contributor, sparked a discussion by his post &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cedricmoullet.com\/news\/whyopenstreetmapfailstoreplaceofficialbasemapsinasustainableway\">Why OpenStreetMap fails to replace official or proprietary base maps in a sustainable way ?<\/a>&#8221; (note how this doesn&#8217;t sound like a question but bears a question mark ;)<\/p>\n<p>For simplicity, I will re-list C\u00e9dric&#8217;s 13 points here:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>1. Because it\u2019s not possible to make a map for all zoom levels<br \/>\n2. Because the finances are not secured on long term<br \/>\n3. Because the data model is not defined<br \/>\n4. Because the precision is heterogeneous<br \/>\n5. Because the reliability is heterogeneous<br \/>\n6. Because the completeness is heterogeneous<br \/>\n7. Because it requires attribution<br \/>\n8. Because the data are difficult to extract<br \/>\n9. Because noone takes the responsibility about the data<br \/>\n10. Because it lacks a QA step by an accountable body<br \/>\n11. Because it is not multilingual<br \/>\n12. Because first acquisition is fun and data update is boring<br \/>\n13. Because Google Map Maker Workflow is for the broad public and OpenStreetMap workflow for the map enthusiasts<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Numerous reactions (not further detailed) motivated C\u00e9dric to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cedricmoullet.com\/news\/whyopenstreetmapfailstoreplaceofficialorproprietarybasemapsinasustainablewayclarifications\">post some clarifications<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Enters Stefan Keller. He is a professor at the Hochschule f\u00fcr Technik in Rapperswil (Switzerland) and (I think) could be described as an open source and OSM enthusiast and evangelist. In agreement with C\u00e9dric Moullet, Stefan Keller started a thread on\u00a0the Swiss GIS\/geospatial industry forum geowebforum. <a href=\"http:\/\/geowebforum.ch\/thread.php?threadID=1004\">In his post he objects to various of C\u00e9dric&#8217;s points<\/a>. Marc Wick (founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geonames.org\/\">Geonames<\/a>) also weighs in on the debate with some interesting points and finally, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#%21\/ping13\">Stephan Heuel<\/a> and I, also contribute our view of the topic (spoiler: we agree with most of C\u00e9dric&#8217;s points).<\/p>\n<p>Of course, I&#8217;m biased, but I think the thread which developed is definitely worth reading.
