{"id":953,"date":"2012-09-07T19:47:29","date_gmt":"2012-09-07T17:47:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/visurus.wordpress.com\/?p=953"},"modified":"2013-12-10T10:45:27","modified_gmt":"2013-12-10T10:45:27","slug":"swiss-population-density-versus-that-of-cities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ralphstraumann.ch\/blog\/2012\/09\/swiss-population-density-versus-that-of-cities\/","title":{"rendered":"Swiss population density versus that of cities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Swiss population has grown more or less steadily over the last decades:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" title=\"Population growth\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bfs.admin.ch\/bfs\/portal\/de\/index\/themen\/01\/02\/blank\/key\/bevoelkerungsstand.parsys.0002.Image.gif\" width=\"512\" height=\"323\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With a current growth of about 1%, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bfs.admin.ch\/bfs\/portal\/de\/index\/themen\/01\/02\/blank\/key\/bevoelkerungsstand.html\">Federal Statistics Office<\/a> has forecast that Switzerland should have welcomed the 8 millionth inhabitant at some point this summer (jeez, I remember learning at school that Switzerland has 6.5 mio. inhabitants \u2013 you can check above where <em>that<\/em> puts me on the graph).<\/p>\n<p>Now, Switzerland as a country is relatively heterogeneous, topographically speaking, with the Alps in the south. So it would be hard to spread out\u00a0built-up areas evenly:<\/p>\n<div class=\"googlemaps\">\n\t\t\t\t<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" marginheight=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\"  src=\"https:\/\/maps.google.ch\/maps?f=q&#038;source=s_q&#038;hl=en&#038;geocode=&#038;q=switzerland&#038;aq=&#038;sll=46.811339,7.174072&#038;sspn=5.410053,6.591797&#038;t=p&#038;ie=UTF8&#038;hnear=Switzerland&#038;ll=46.762443,8.305664&#038;spn=3.612513,7.03125&#038;z=7&#038;output=embed\"><\/iframe>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>Yet, as an experiment I have taken data about some well-known, diverse, international cities and have computed the area that would be needed to house the entire Swiss population of 8 millions (give or take) at the cities&#8217; population densities.
